As creepy as these supposed incidents are made to seem like, these incidents have sort of transcended from mere theories or made-up fiction to actual realities to such an extent that they have been made tourist centers. In fact, ghost, paranormal and clairvoyant enthusiasts find these places which have been termed haunted as choice locations for activities such as ghost hunting! It is commonly said that in the mouth of a few witnesses then there exists at least an iota of truth; the haunting capabilities of these places have been propped up by the fact that there are a good number of people who testify on a regular of basis of encountering ghosts at one time or the other. These haunted places cut across different kind of buildings and locations; they include cinema halls, hotels, museums, cemeteries, historical sites, battlefields, mansions and even residential homes. This is Roman history roughly from its mythological dawning at about 753 BC to the time when free adult males within the Roman Empire were declared citizens of Rome by Emperor Caracalla in 212 CE. Beard starts the history of ancient Rome with an account of how Lucius Sergius Catalina (Cataline) conspired against Rome and how he was foiled by the Senate. The book uses the conspiracy as a springboard to discuss various aspects of Roman civilization, including citizenship and its military as well as Rome's perceptions of social structures such as slavery, religion, and the position of women in society. Historical figures that greatly influenced the development of the empire are also discussed. The book proposes that the rise of the Roman Empire from a small settlement near the Tiber to the most powerful empire in ancient history was due to Rome's receptiveness to trying new ideas. Likewise, Beard believes that Roman civilization is still very relevant to our modern times, particularly to current-day discourses on freedom and protection of the state. SPQR is the abbreviated form of Senatus Populusque Romanos, meaning "the Senate and the People of Rome", which is ubiquitously etched in most Roman manuscripts, objects, and structures. This summary of Mary Beard's SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome is aimed at those who want to capture the gist of the book. You get the main summary along with all of the benefits and lessons the actual book has to offer. This volume is a posthumous revised edition of selected papers by Andrzej Kopcewicz on classic works of American and Irish fiction, published originally between 1979 and 2005. The book opens with two introductory sketches: a semi-theoretical one on intertextuality and a semi-historical one on the interaction of high and low literary forms. The gist of the book are textual analyses of the intricacies and reciprocities of some of the best-known works by Herman Melville, Frank R. Stockton, Henry Adams, Thomas Pynchon, Gilbert Sorrentino, Donald Barthelme, Paul Auster, Flann O'Brien, and James Joyce. While the essays lend themselves to being read in any order, as well as in isolation, the underlying Peircean-Joycean premise of the book is a semiotic-mythical commodius vicus of palimpsestic recirculation. Informed by a combination of poetic sensibility and disciplined as well as erudite mind, the ten essays collected here demonstrate that the agenda and methods of the more traditional close reading and the more contemporary intertextuality are not exclusive of each other.
