This is a summary of Nir Eyal's Hooked: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter How do successful companies create products people can't put down? Why do some products capture widespread attention while others flop? What makes us engage with certain products out of sheer habit? Is there a pattern underlying how technologies hook us? This best-seller answers these questions (and many more) by explaining the Hook Model - a four-step process embedded into the products of many successful companies to subtly encourage customer behavior. Through consecutive "hook cycles," these products reach their ultimate goal of bringing users back again and again without depending on costly advertising or aggressive messaging. Hooked is based on Eyal's years of research, consulting, and practical experience. He wrote the book he wished had been available to him as a start-up founder - not abstract theory, but a how-to guide for building better products. Hooked is written for product managers, designers, marketers, start-up founders, and anyone who seeks to understand how products influence our behavior. This is a summary of Jane Mayer's Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right. It is a strong and powerful book that shows an in-depth report of a network made up of the wealthy and the influential and their goal of creating a clear plan to change the American political structure. Within the network are people whose wealth is overflowing. They create an environment fashioned after their corporate and personal interests. In fact, some of these companies have been accused of problems like worker safety, federal pollution, tax laws and even securities. There are two main people that are part of the network, David Koch and Charles Koch. The brothers inherited their father's wealth, who in turn built their huge fortune from oil refineries in both Hitler's Germany as well as Stalin's Russia. With their money, they gathered resources to create a major influence in various sectors like in the Congress, academic, court, think tanks, state houses and hopefully, the US Presidency. Jane Mayer spent five years conducting hundreds of interviews - including with several sources within the network - and scoured public records, private papers, and court proceedings in reporting this book. In a taut and utterly convincing narrative, she traces the byzantine trail of the billions of dollars spent by the network and provides vivid portraits of the colorful figures behind the new American oligarchy. This is a summary of Susan Cain's Quiet, the book that started the Quiet Revolution. At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts - Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak - that we owe many of the great contributions to society. In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the 20th century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts - from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps in to the power of questions. Passionately argued, superbly researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves. This is a summary of Pam Grout's E-Squared: Nine Do-It-Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality E-Squared could best be described as a lab manual with simple experiments to prove once and for all that reality is malleable, that consciousness trumps matter, and that you shape your life with your mind. Rather than take it on faith, you are invited to conduct nine 48-hour experiments to prove there really is a positive, loving, totally hip force in the universe. Yes, you read that right. It says prove. The experiments, each of which can be conducted with absolutely no money and very little time expenditure, demonstrate that spiritual principles are as dependable as gravity, as consistent as Newton's laws of motion. For years, you've been hoping and praying that spiritual principles are true. Now, you can know. E-Squared proves the following: 1. There is an invisible energy force or field of infinite possibilities. 2. You impact the field and draw from it according to your beliefs and expectations. 3. You, too, are a field of energy. 4. Whatever you focus on expands. 5. Your connection to the field provides accurate and unlimited guidance. 6. Your thoughts and consciousness impact matter. 7. Your thoughts and consciousness provide the scaffolding for your physical body. 8. You are connected to everything and everyone else in the universe. 9. The universe is limitless, abundant, and strangely accommodating. This is a summary of Eric Ries' The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses. Most startups fail. But many of those failures are preventable. The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched. Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business. The Lean Startup approach fosters companies that are both more capital efficient and that leverage human creativity more effectively. Inspired by lessons from lean manufacturing, it relies on "validated learning", rapid scientific experimentation, as well as a number of counter-intuitive practices that shorten product development cycles, measure actual progress without resorting to vanity metrics, and learn what customers really want. It enables a company to shift directions with agility, altering plans inch by inch, minute by minute. Rather than wasting time creating elaborate business plans, The Lean Startup offers entrepreneurs - in companies of all sizes - a way to test their vision continuously, to adapt and adjust before it's too late. Ries provides a scientific approach to creating and managing successful startups in an age when companies need to innovate more than ever. This book is a compilation of papers that I have presented at different seminars. I decided to put them together in order to contribute to the ongoing discussion surrounding the issues of Blackness and Whiteness in South Africa and across the world. It is no secret that issues of race render others uncomfortable, making them exit the discussions or discuss them apologetically for fear of judgment of their views , however, it is vital to create a conducive environment in which these issues can be discussed more broadly, robustly, and without fear. These conversations need to be facilitated so that the unavoidable nervousness and quarrels that usually occur do not damage the gist of the deliberations, but that they can instead be used as scholarship openings, hence the book is titled Frank Talk.
