Social Security is an American insurance program which pays out millions of dollars each year. It represents one among many complex government programs. The Social Security program is very hard to understand and use. For example, each companion's benefit for married couples includes 10 mathematical functions. In general, this program has more instructions in the Program Operating Manual System (POMS), than the Federal Tax Code does. This guide presents a basic approach for using the Social Security program, expanding an ordinary Social Security benefit to one with parent, child, matrimonial, divorcee, survivor, and benefits for disability. The authors explain just how signing up for benefits and not receiving them, or starting, pausing, and restarting benefits can help people achieve more out of this program. The guide also talks about risks associated with the Social Security program. This summary provides an informal critique and summary of the main topics and messages of the guide. It also contains more information about the guide itself, as well as important studies and documents about the future and present benefits of Social Security. This summary is aimed for those who want to capture the gist of the book but don't have the current time to devour the whole book. This is a summary of Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle is the Way. The book has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do. This summary is aimed for those who want to capture the gist of the book but don't have the current time to listen to the whole thing. You get the main summary along with all of the benefits and lessons the actual book has to offer. While The Obstacle Is the Way is a book about philosophies in general, it is not an academic textbook on the subject. Instead, it is primarily a book to learn for yourself the basic tenets of Stoic philosophy and how to understand and apply them to daily life. "Obstacle" is the most frequently used word throughout the book, as well as a very important part of the title because it is all about how to manage the obstacles life throws at us. The central theme of the work is the belief that everyone is able to handle the obstacles that come with life even though we can't necessarily control everything about life. While we may not be in charge of the circumstances, it is possible to always be in command of ourselves and how we choose to respond to the challenges presented. Living by the principles of Stoicism means individuals deliberately control themselves in the face of obstacles which in turn strengthens willpower and confidence for difficult times in the future. This book almost never mentions the actual word "Stoicism." The author deliberately neglects to explain exactly what it is and barely mentions any philosophers of Stoicism from centuries ago - except Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Aurelius is written about more than anyone else because his thoughts written in Meditations inspired the author to write this book. Meditations provides a lot of informative ideas, but they are not quite complete. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Lee Crooks. 'The Student's Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience is a perfect introduction to the field. I use it in my own teaching and recommend it to colleagues from other disciplines who are curious about cognitive neuroscience. Ward is discerning about where to go into detail and where to present a skillfully summarized gist, and always connects facts and findings to the larger picture of what we know and how we know it. The result is a smart, approachable introduction to the concepts and methods of cognitive neuroscience.' - Martha J. Farah, Director of the Center for Neuroscienceand Society, University of Pennsylvania, USA 'In The Student’s Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience, Jamie Ward provides a clear, informative, and engaging introduction to this important subject. The third edition builds on the strengths of the previous editions, which include an impressive integration of insights from cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, and neuroimaging. The text provides a solid grounding in all of the key topic areas of cognitive neuroscience that includes both classic studies and cutting edge research. I highly recommend this excellent text.' - Daniel L. Schacter, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, USA 'Jamie Ward’s The Student’s Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience is an outstanding addition to the field. Its coverage of topics is hugely impressive – from basic methods in cognitive neuroscience through to details chapters covering topics such as emotion as well as standard cognitive topics such as language and memory. This reflects the exciting converging of research over the past few years. The book also engages in state-of-the-art methods and integrates them in a way that will help students understand the relations between different aspects of the discipline. A tremendous achievement.' - Glyn Humphreys, Watts Professor of Experimental Psychology and Head of Department, University of Oxford, UK
This book is based on the backdrop of the social system in India i.e caste-system. This book may be the first of it's kind which describes the cause, prevailing challenges and its solution wrapped in a beautiful story. The central character being a journalist finds the caste system carrying a lot of questions. How did it originate? How it flourished? Do our religious books really talk about the same system we are going through? How can one know his caste, if he/she is an orphan? Which Hindu book confirms caste system to be hereditary? Which book confirms the hierarchy of Brahmin being the top of order and Shudras the lowest? Or, Are we living in illusion? What if caste system is not hereditary? If caste system is a system, what are its basic rules? Who coined the rules? What are the solutions for problems arising due to caste system? Can we implement any solution which satisfies all? In search of all these questions Journalist Gaurav meets three different interesting characters, one being advocate Chitra. A group of four is formed who decides to challenge the current caste system. In order to challenge the system they have to face a Shastrath with Hindu Religious teacher Shankracharya. What happens afterwards is the gist of the story. This book unfolds many unknown facts about the caste system, & also suggests the best way to deal with it. The readers will not only find a beautiful story but will get benefited by the knowledge it shares.
viii beginning to understand-their action, as will be brought out in this symposium. During this same period another development took place in psychiatry, namely, social and community psychiatry, interpreted by some, incorrectly, in my opinion, as the antitheses of the biological approach. The whole area of the delivery of mental health services, which quickly became more of a political and social issue than a medical one, led to confusion, disillusionment, despair, and also soul-searching by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. The remarkable Pablo Picasso said, 'the development of photography freed the artist to express his own creativity. ' I have paraphrased Picasso's insightful remark, namely, 'the development of biology and social and community psychiatry should free the psychiatrist to express his own creati vity as a physician. ' It should allow him to regain his basic medi cal identity. As his medical identity becomes paramount, then the pejorative classification of psychiatrists into those 'organically oriented' and those 'dynamically-oriented' will no longer be valid. The psychiatrist, like his medical colleague, must be concerned with the psychological, psychosocial, biological, and technical aspects of psychiatry. The strengthening and development of the medical identity of the psychiatrist imposes increased responsibilities on him and on psychiatry as a medical discipline. On the one hand, he will have to become more of a neuro-bi_ gist and, on the other, more of a behavioral scientist.
This textbook covers the mathematical foundations of the analysis of algorithms. The gist of the book is how to argue, without the burden of excessive formalism, that a given algorithm does what it is supposed to do. The two key ideas of the proof of correctness, induction and invariance, are employed in the framework of pre/post-conditions and loop invariants. The algorithms considered are the basic and traditional algorithms of computer science, such as Greedy, Dynamic and Divide & Conquer. In addition, two classes of algorithms that rarely make it into introductory textbooks are discussed. Randomized algorithms, which are now ubiquitous because of their applications to cryptography; and Online algorithms, which are essential in fields as diverse as operating systems (caching, in particular) and stock-market predictions. This self-contained book is intended for undergraduate students in computer science and mathematics.
To my mind, the superoxide radical discovered by Linus Pauling more than 50 years ago is about to become a major issue in Ameri can medicine. Uncannily, Pauling's early focus on vitamin C has pointed the way to the whole catalogue of free-radical scavengers, which we in medicine will be using in the coming decade. In ophthalmology, the basic scientists have been talking about the role of free-radical induction by light for some time. They have accumulated an increasing amount of evidence supporting the idea that prolonged light exposure contributes to cataract development and retinal degeneration. Through Clinical Light Damage to the Eye, we hope to bring this message to the practicing ophthalmolo gist. Because Dr. Pauling's work bears so strongly on the key issue of free-radical damage, and because of my own great respect for him as a scientist and a man of rare courage, I invited Dr. Pauling to write the foreword to Clinical Light Damage to the Eye, which follows.
